The Dakabin State School Library strives to deliver a wide range of services to all school community members - students, staff and parents. The major purpose of our Library is to assist students to achieve information literacy, to help them become lifelong independent and interdependent learners, informed decision makers and effective communicators.  It is integral to the teaching and learning process.

Opening Hours

8:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday to Friday

The Library is open every lunch-time, but is closed at morning tea time.

 Borrowing

§         All students from Prep to Year 7 may borrow books for up to two weeks at a time.  A Library Bag is needed for years Prep-3.

§         Parents are always welcome to borrow extra books for their children either for reading or research.

§         'Overdues Lists' are given to teachers each week.  These are meant to remind students to return or renew books.

§         If a child loses or damages a library book, parents are asked to replace it with a copy of the same book, or donate the cost of the book to the school to enable us to replace it.

Our Library/Resource centre is automated and all computers in the school can act as catalogue access terminals in addition to providing connections to the Internet, CD-ROMs and the school’s intranet.
The library is staffed by a 0.5 teacher-librarian and teacher-aide. Our Head of Curriculum is also based in the library. On 2 days a week a specialist ICT teacher works from the library.
The activities covered in the library will enhance students’ information retrieval skills using resources which may include the Internet, encyclopaedias and CD-ROMs as well as books and other print media. Arts/Media skills, Literature appreciation skills and Literacy strategies may also be utilised.
Extra-curricular groups (Writers' Group, Animation Group and Maths Extension Group) use the library resources after school throughout the year.
Students are also encouraged to use the Library/Resource centre as a recreational resource and it is open before school each morning as well as most lunch hours during the week. At lunch time students are invited to use the computers, play board and card games, read, borrow books, draw or sit and talk with their friends.
Parents are welcome to visit and help their younger children select a book for borrowing.
